Mother's Day

Yesterday on Mother’s Day I had a beautiful and delicious brunch at the house of one of my daughters.  A lot of time and effort had been put into the meal and there was much laughter and love around the table among the three generations that were there.  And while I appreciated every minute of the day, there was one thought that came strongly to me.  I did not need a specially marked day to be one for mothers.

My true mother’s days have come all through the last 50 years.  I can see eager faces dripping with watermelon juice on a waterside dock, I can see a never-to-be-one musician dutifully plying her clarinet in junior high, a babysitter handling a difficult charge, a new driver gracefully transporting her non-driving siblings, and a generous blur of solemn, happy, carefree, diligent, and beautiful faces that fill my mind.

These memories cannot be produced on a certain day but live behind that day in memory where the true mother’s day lies. I hope your day was filled with them as well.
